The sands of Vila Praia de Âncora extend from the fishing port over to the Âncora river which reaches the coast here after its 15 kilometre descent through the Serra de Arga hills, an attractive natural environment, which features some good walking conditions. This enormous beach experiences some strong Atlantic waves which means high quality surfing. Bathers tend to congregate more on the area adjoining the Avenida Marginal coast road, where the waters are calmer and access is easier. The southern area, accessible to walkers only over a wooden walkway, contains practically always deserted spaces, surrounded by protected sand dunes.
