This renovated country house is located on the south-eastern part of the island, in the hamlet Calheta,
Recently renovated and newly fully furnished, the comfortable house comprises 2 bedrooms (each sleeps 3 persons; one with double bed (180x200) and a single sofa bed; a smaller bedroom with bunk beds (low bed 140x200, high bed 90x200)), living/dining room with radio and CD-player, equipped kitchen and shower room with washing machine.
A nature garden surrounds the house, where ones finds garden furniture.
Sleeps 6 persons, self catering.
The rippled coastline with protruding boulders and bays offers superb conditions for various nautical sports.
Praia Formosa is one of the largest inlets in the Azores. Beautiful white sand lines the waterfront from Prainha to the Ponta de Malbusca. It is on this beach the yearly Maré de Agosto (August Tides) Festival is held.
The “São Lourenço” bay is one of the most beautiful bays in the archipelago. Its’ small white beaches, its’ glimmering hillsides, checkerboarded by basalt fences mixes perfectly with the greenery in the vineyards and the whiteness of the houses. Next door you will find the “Romeiro” islet which contains a natural interior pier and a grotto exhibiting stalactites and stalagmites.
Maia and Anjos, with their natural pools of crystal clear water and large variety of fish are wonderful areas for those that love the sea.
Many viewpoints such as, “Fontinhas”, “Lagoinhas”, “Espigão” and “Picos”, along with “Pico Alto” (587 meters) present an excellent overview of the island and the coast.
Santa Maria opens its’ caverns, fissures and tunnels which remain from the past volcanic activity to the speleologist. Proper equipment and a guide are recommended. Especially deserving of a visit are those in “Santana”, “Baía do Cura”, “Cré”, “Àgua”, “Velha”, “Nova”, and “Faneca”. The Islets of “Lagoinhas” and “Vila” are a part of the coastal landscape.
Also Figueiral, Vinha Velha and Montegordo with their marine-life fossils are of special interest to lovers of geology.
“Formigas”, a group of eight islets 37 km’s north-west of Santa Maria, is a privileged nesting area for many seabirds and it has been granted a Statute of Natural Reserve due to the abundance of sea life.
